Another reason why men like curves

Lawson graduated from Oxford before finding fame in the kitchen

Nigella Lawson's voluptuous curves have given her a legion of male admirers, but a new academic study suggests that her appeal, and that of other curvy women, is based on more than the purely physical.

It is already known that curvaceous women live longer and that men find them more attractive but the new research suggests that they are also cleverer.

The study, to be published this week, shows that men who admire women with hourglass figures do so because they are more intelligent and therefore produce more intelligent children than waif-like women or those of "apple-shaped" proportions.

The case of Lawson appears to bear out the findings. Possessing perhaps Britain's most famous hourglass figure, the cookery presenter is also an Oxford graduate.

Rachel Weisz, the naturally curvy Oscar-winning actress, completed an English degree at Cambridge before she headed for Hollywood.

The scientists, from the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Pittsburgh, concluded that women with lower waist-to-hip ratios (WHR) produced children with better intellectual abilities.

They found that a woman's hips and thighs contained omega-3 fatty acids, which help nurture both mother and baby's brains during pregnancy. Fat around the waist, however, contains higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids, which does not help brain growth.

"Shapely hips and thighs hold essential nutrients that nurse brains and could produce smart kids, too," said one researcher, Steven Gaulin, of the University of California at Santa Barbara.

His colleague, William Lassek, from the University of Pittsburgh, said: "Men respond because it's reproductively important."

Scientific studies have consistently demonstrated that men through the ages have found women with hourglass figures more attractive.

A study published this year found that as far back as the ancient Egyptians men have sought out curvaceous women.

However, the reason for the attraction has never been conclusively proven. Many scientists believed that a shapely figure suggested to a man that a woman would be good at bearing children and have a longer life expectancy.

The researchers tested 16,000 women and girls and found that women with a greater difference between their waist and hip measurements scored significantly higher in the tests, as did their children.

The research suggests that children born to teenagers do worse in cognitive tests because their mothers did not have enough of the omega-3 acids stored in their hips.

Disaster of Meat Consumption

The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), commissioned by Minister Cramer of the Environment run a study of consumption of energy and food much more efficiently.

The meat consumption imposes a significant drain on the global agricultural land. Some 80 percent of which is used for only 15 percent of the calories in our food production. Especially cattle are relatively inefficient food factories.

A switch to a daily diet of 10 grams of beef, pork 10 grams, 47 grams and 23 grams of chicken eggs and fish would need to land in half.

Also, this diet 20 to 30 percent of the GHG reductions necessary to bring the global warming be limited to 2 degrees. It is the first time that these estimates lead to a policy recommendation.

That the (rich) man can not escape behavior changes to the earth to keep viable, says UN climate negotiator Yvo de Boer. "You must ask fundamental questions about our consumption."

Windows 7 Breaking Sale Record

With Microsoft finally releasing the beta of it's the much awaited and hyped OS, Windows 7, the tech world has been abuzz. Pre-release leaks on torrent sites, speculation about the feature set of Windows 7 and arguments about whether it's really a deserving candidate to be a new version of Windows OS or just a patch up job on Vista - have all helped build up the hype. I decided to grab a copy of the beta and satiate my curiosity :) Here's a complete review of Windows 7 beta, right from download & installation till the final user experience...

Downloading the beta

The download can be started from the official Microsoft website:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx

The download is managed by the Akamai Download manager which will need you to run an ActiveX control in your browser. I could not get the download to start in Firefox and Chrome browsers and had to (grudgingly) switch over to IE. However, a better alternative that emerged later was the direct download link posted on several blog sites:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/633118BD-6C3D-45A4-B985-F0FDFFE1B021/EN/7000.0.081212-1400_client_en-us_Ultimate-GB1CULFRE_EN_DVD.iso (For 32 bit systems)

I would personally recommend staying away from torrent sites for an OS download because of obvious reasons! However, I did register on the official website of Windows 7 to get a product key for my copy.

Once downloaded, the ISO needs to be burnt onto a DVD. I installed my copy of Windows 7 on a separate partition on my disk allowing it to dual boot with Windows Vista Business. Following is the system configuration:

Toshiba Satellite Pro M200
Intel Core Duo 2GHz, 2GB RAM
Intel Chipset - 256 MB shared video memory
HDD - 80 GB (55 GB + 18 GB for Windows 7) - The partitoning was done using Acronis Disk Creator Suite on Windows Vista.

Why Windows 7?

A sample of the new, improved, or downright cool.
Windows Touch to turn your fingers into a mouse.
Play To for streaming music or video around the house.
Remote Media Streaming to access your home media library via the Internet.
HomeGroup for headache-free sharing on a home network.
Windows Search to instantly find virtually anything.

Xenoestrogens is collected in our fatty tissues (breast, brain, and liver) and cause "estrogen dominance". Xenoestrogens products are applied to our fruits and vegetables every year in the form of chemical fertilizers and sprays. When we use these fruits or vegetables we also consume a small amount of xenoestrogens. This existence cause early menstruation in girls and induce long-term consequences after lengthy lifetime exposure to estrogen. Diwali, Rangoli, Lamps

Diwali means a row of lamps. They are an invitation to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. A Diwali lamp is a silent reminder that enlightenment and radiance are the goals of human life. Firecrackers are burst to ward off the evil spirits. An essential part of the festival is the sharing of sweets with relatives, friends, neighbors, and business associates as a gesture of goodwill.

Diwali is the best loved and most universal four-day celebration in India. Different legends are associated with its origin. On the eve of Diwali, Known as Dhana-trayodashi, Rangoli (colored Powder) is used to create colorful patterns in the entryway.

Day1: Narak Chaturdashi, marks the day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and freed the world from fear.

Day 2: Laxmi Pooja, the goddess of wealth is welcomed into all household.

Day 3: Padwa is the day symbolizing love and devotion between the wife and husband.

Day 4: Bhau-Bheej is the day brothers take gifts and sweets to their sisters.  The sisters offer prayers for the brothers' longevity and prosperity.

How to create the rangoli?

Choose a design that you want to draw. You may find designs from books and magazines or you may try to create your own design. Rangoli designs are symmetrical in nature and geometric in shape.

If you want to try out a design of your own, first draw it on a piece of paper and fill in the design with coloured sketch pens to get an idea about how the rangoli will look. Wipe the floor (where you want to create the rangoli) with a wet cloth and wait for the area to dry. With a piece of chalk, first draw the outline of the rangoli design.

Now it's time to fill in the outline with rangoli powder, the most challenging part of the whole exercise. Pick up some powder with your thumb and index finger and fill in the design by rubbing the two fingers together and sprinkling the powder on the floor. Take care to sprinkle the powder carefully, don't let powders of two different colours merge with each other.

You may create spaces within the rangoli design to place diyas. You could also use flower petals of different colours (golden marigolds, bright red roses) to add that extra dimension to your design.

With a little bit of imagination, a dash of aesthetic sense and dollops of patience, you can create a piece of art that will add lots of colour to your diwali celebrations.

Rangoli Themes

The art of rangoli is known by different names in different regions of the country. In Maharashtra, it is called 'rangoli', while it is known as 'kolam' in South India and 'alpana' in Bengal.
